What I thought of every book I read in April | 12.05.2024
I read six books throughout April. Here they are and what I thought of them
👋 Hello
Happy Sunday everyone! It’s that time of year again where I started talking about the potential fact that might actually be in summer now. In England we’ve had a lovely few days of weather, so fingers crossed it continues!
I don’t want to talk about it too much to not sound “beggy”, but, after a few people have suggested it to me, I have actually set up a Patreon.
A Patreon allows you to subscribe monthly to simply support me. I currently only have two very low tiers to start. The first for $3 a month which simply allows you to show your support for me. If you’ve ever enjoyed my videos or blog, this might be a nice tier to start on.
Then the second tier is at $7 a month and this one will see you getting exclusive content not seen anywhere else - early access to all of my YouTube videos and exclusive rights to any polls (what should I read next, what video should I record next etc).
So if you have any spare cash, it would go a long way towards paying my website fees.
Anyway, I won’t bring it up often, just thought I’d mention it!
Other than setting this up, I’ve also been reading and working mostly. I’ve also had some drama where I’ve been scammed out of £150 on Facebook marketplace, but that’s a story for another day - ha!
Keep scrolling for the usual selection of articles, book updates and mad cheap books!
✍️ What I’ve posted since my last newsletter
THE 6 BOOKS I READ THROUGHOUT APRIL AND WHAT I THOUGHT OF THEM
“This was a great reading month with a whole load of thrillers. You can tell I had a thriller hype throughout the month with The Drift, Lie With Me and None Of This Is True.
None Of This Is True is one of the best thrillers I’ve ever read. It was tense and kept me hooked throughout and had twists and turns for days at the end. Loved it!
I was also a huge fan of The Drift which has cast my eye to The Gathering by C.J. Tudor. The Drift managed to incorporate three interesting stories and a little bit of science fiction too which really impressed me. I’ve heard The Gathering is great too.”
📖 What I’ve been reading this week
The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne
The Heart’s Invisible Furies is one of the books you lot chose for me to read in May. I’m about halfway through it and it’s been absolutely brilliant.
I summed it up quite well over on Twitter: It’s about a man called Cyril who realises he’s gay from a young age and it tells the story of his struggles with such growing up in the middle of the 20th century and further on.
It’s beautifully written and, obviously due to the matter at had, very powerful and can be quite emotional to read!
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
I finished Iron Widow early on in the week and absolutely loved it.
As I’ve mentioned in a video on TikTok, this was such a stark contrast from the other books I’ve been reading recently and was a brilliant switch of style.
It’s about a place where mecha-bots, powered by humans’ “Qi” fight an invading alien species. It’s all very science fiction/fantasy but also was full of action, fun and mostly steered away from any cliches which I had a lot of time for.
