Two reviews in one day | 19.05.2024
I wrote absolutely nothing all week and then I wrote two reviews in one day yesterday!
👋 Hello
Happy Sunday everybody! It was a beautiful day yesterday evening and is supposed to be a banger today too. By the time you’re reading this, I hope you’ve managed to get outside and get yourself some vitamin D!
This week I’ve been reading Lonesome Dove, a 900+ page epic that was kindly sent to me by a follower on Instagram and a book that many people seem to sing praises about. I’m doing a video for my YouTube channel where I’ll be reading it on camera in a blog sort of format. Mostly it’s been videos of me listening to the audiobook in the rain ha!
Anyway, let’s see what else has been happening over the past week and what I’m reading and some great books to read!
✍️ What I’ve posted since my last newsletter
US BY DAVID NICHOLLS BOOK REVIEW
“Us is the second book by David Nicholls I’ve read and I’d say I still preferred One Day. However, Us gives me confidence that Nicholls is an author whose writing and stories I will always thoroughly enjoy. Nicholls has a brilliant talent for incorporating gritty, down-to-earth stories into his novels. Us is another story that’ll make you feel incredibly connected to the main characters and also feel every emotion they feel and be vying for everything to work out for them at the end. If you enjoyed the writing style and storytelling technique of One Day, I’d say you’d enjoy Us too.”
IRON WIDOW BY XIRAN JAY ZHAO BOOK REVIEW
“The first few chapters of Iron Widow were fantastic and excited the nerd inside me with massive transforming robots. However, I wasn’t still expecting to be as interested in the characters and the story by the very end. Not only did Iron Widow scratch that nerdy itch inside me but it’s made me genuinely interested to read the sequel. There are no cliche “romantasy” tropes here, just fast-paced action with a badass main character and a plot that has just enough depth and backstory that I’m excited to see where Zhao is taking this next later this year!”
📖 What I’ve been reading this week
The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne
I finished The Heart’s Invisible Furies this week and it was one of the most incredible books I’ve ever read. This is a fantastic book - it’s written beautifully, poignant and I couldn’t help but fall in love with Cyril and his story.
I’ll be putting my review of it up next week.
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
I was kindly sent Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry by a follower on Instagram who said that it was their favourite book of all time and since showing it on social media, many other people have said some incredibly positive things too!
I’m about 150 pages through at the moment and so far it’s very slow. I’m starting to grow attached to the characters but I’m still yet to see where it’s going and how it’s going to become such a highly-rated book.
📚 Book deal - 99p eBooks
You can’t go wrong on a sunny day like today by picking up a brand new 99p Kindle book and sitting outside in the sun, tanning and reading some absolute banger knowing it cost you less than a good old-fashioned pound coin.
As always, I’ve had a look through the 99p Kindle deals and picked out some bangers I’ve heard good things about or have read and approve of myself.
