The best thriller I've ever read? | 05.05.2024
This isn't clickbait, I promise I did actually recently read a thriller that I might consider one of the best thrillers I've ever read.
👋 Hello
Oh hey! Sorry not sorry for the clickbait title. I genuinely have recently read one of the best thrillers I’ve ever read in Lisa Jewell’s None Of This Is True. But more on that in a little bit.
So it’s now May and I’ve not yet done my article on my April reading round up and I’ve only done one YouTube video so far (still yet to do anything for TikTok or any other socials). Do feel free to watch the YT vid though:
Other than this, this week has been spent working (obvs), reading and writing a few articles for you to all read. So let’s get into those…
✍️ What I’ve posted since my last newsletter
NONE OF THIS IS TRUE BY LISA JEWELL BOOK REVIEW
“Reading None Of This Is True felt like when you watch one of those Netflix documentaries where you can’t quite believe there are people out there that would do such a thing. As a thriller, None Of This Is True is one of the best I’ve ever read – it’s Lisa Jewell’s best book to date. It’s full of suspense, full of the constant want to know what’s coming next and had me constantly pulling literal shock emojis whilst I was reading and listening to it. If you can, listen to the audiobook because it’s immense, but either way, this is, for me, at the very peak of the mountain of best thrillers I’ve ever read.”
LIE WITH ME BY SABINE DURRANT BOOK REVIEW
“The more and more I think about it, the more and more I’m convinced that Lie With Me by Sabine Durrant is actually a really well-thought-out thriller. It’s purposefully slow at the start. Paul, our main character, is purposefully unlikeable. It’s all leading up to a finale that makes the previous 200 or so pages make complete sense and seem like a well-crafted run-up to a well throughout resolution to the book. I had my doubts about Lie With Me right up until the finale convinced me this is a great thriller you should definitely stick with.”
THE DRIFT BY C.J. TUDOR BOOK REVIEW
“The Drift was my first C.J. Tudor book after a lot of hype and I must say I was very impressed. To write three stories in tandem, have them all interesting, have them all be interlinked and include some amazing characters all at the same time is a real talent. As well as this, Tudor really piqued my interest when I realised there were some light fantasy elements to the story too. The Drift is a brilliant thriller with some horror/post-apocalyptic elements that has made me really want to read more from Tudor!”
📖 What I’ve been reading this week
Us by David Nicholls
I finished Us by David Nicholls this week. After absolutely adoring One Day, I was keen to see whether that was a fluke or whether Nicholls is an author I should be reading more from.
Us was brilliant too. It didn’t have quite the same impact on me as One Day did but I think Nicholls has cemented himself as an author with a real talent for portraying human situations with likeable and real characters. I’ll definitely be reading more from him. Look out for my review over this coming week.
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
Iron Widow was very kindly sent to me by a follower from TikTok and so I picked it up.
It’s a really fun book about a world where humans are fighting against an alien species in massive mecha-bots which use the human’s Qi to be powered. The more willpower you have, the higher your Qi. However, women are there to simply serve men, in every aspect of society.
After the sister of our main character is killed, she wants to get revenge against the men and the regime.
It’s been brilliant so far. It’s a book written by someone who’s not worried about racing through the plot to get to the exciting moments which is always a breath of fresh air after slower-paced novels.
