Apparently the ACATOR series just isn't good | 24.03.2024
A catch up on where the hell I was last week and what I've been posting over the past two weeks!
👋 Hello
Hi! So um… I was incredibly hungover last week and so didn’t feel well enough to sit down and write a newsletter. It’s my own fault, despite being 29, I thought I could go to a housewarming and smash eight beers on a next-to-empty stomach. I could not.
ANYWAY - that means you’ve got an absolute booster of a newsletter this week!
Over the past week, I have posted a heck of a lot to my blog, been reading non-stop and also posting regularly to my social channels.
I’m really going hard on TikTok and YouTube lately and am posting really consistently on there, so if you’re on either of those, then feel free to go and give me a follow/subscribe.
✍️ What I’ve posted this (past two) week(s)
A COURT OF MIST AND FURY BY SARAH J MAAS
“A Court of Mist and Fury is another disappointment for me in this series unfortunately. I was told that the second was significantly better than the first but I found it to just fall into the same issues as with the first: a very slow start and about 80% of no action until a fairly decent final act that just wasn’t enough to win me over. Its only saving grace was that the final act was genuinely interesting and I did grow to enjoy Feyre and Rhysand once the cringey dialogue and interactions ended. If you didn’t enjoy the A Court of Thorns and Roses, I can’t say you’ll enjoy A Court of Mist and Fury. I’ll read the final book as I feel it’s my duty as a book blogger and some have said that’s where the action is!”
THE MAID BY NITA PROSE BOOK REVIEW
“The Maid is a real mixed bag of a book. I started off really enjoying it. I quickly knew I was going to like the character of Molly and the start of the story was really interesting. However, a weaker final third and an ending that sort of just petered out left me feeling really disappointed. The Maid is a great person-focused story that’s biggest strength is its fantastic cast of characters, so if that’s your bag, you’ll enjoy it. However, if you’re here for a good mystery, you may be left a little underwhelmed.”
AND THEN THERE WERE NONE BY AGATHA CHRISTIE BOOK REVIEW
“And Then There Were None is one of the greatest crime novels of all time for a reason. Christie manages to perfectly balance suspense with the constant want to find out what’s going to happen next. With some clearly defined characters, a cosy setting and a story that will continue to keep you on your toes, And Then There Were None is a classic for a reason. If you’re one of the last four people in the world to not have read the And Then There None yet, then I can guarantee you, you’ll have a great time reading it.”
A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW BY AMOR TOWLES BOOK REVIEW
“A Gentleman in Moscow is my first sleeper hit of the year. Yes, I’d heard good things about it but I did not expect to find it quite so light and heart-warming. Towles’ writing is a joy to behold and makes you, the reader, feel like a gentleman (or equivalent) whilst reading it. The Count is a new favourite character of mine and his confinement to the Metropole turns out to be a real treat for us as readers as we get to experience so many colourful and great characters whom he meets during his time there. A Gentleman in Moscow went from a book I picked up because I just needed something to read into likely featuring in my top books of the year list at the end of the year.”
THE 10 BOOKS I READ IN FEBRUARY AND WHAT I THOUGHT OF THEM
This has been a huge reading month. I read some absolutely fantastic books with two books (One Day and The List of Suspicious Things) that I imagine will feature in my top ten books of the year list at the end of the year.
It was also good fun to read a memoir and one that featured a topic that I don’t really know a lot about in When Your Family Says No. Reading memoirs really opens up your eyes to how different lives can be lived around you and how lucky you are to be living your own life.
📖 What I’ve been reading this week
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas
So as you can see from my review, this has been a lot of my reading this week. I listened to most of it on audiobook and picked up the physical a couple of times during TikTok Live read-a-thons.
I’ll let you read my full review but in general it was very average and another disappointment in the series from me considering how much hype it had!
Sea State by J.M. Simpson
I’m getting closer to finishing Sea State and I’m hoping to have it done sometime over the next week. It’s been a great read so far and one that I’ve definitely enjoyed.
It’s a real human story that has me vouching for our two protagonists and I feel like it’s really building up to some grand finale now!
Shogun by James Clavell
After seeing the TV series becoming a massive hit and that it was based on a book, I knew I had to pick up Shogun. Little did I know it was over 1,000 pages and that the audiobooks (yes, it’s split into two) were over 53 hours.
There’s a fantastic amount of depth and length to everything and also a surprising amount of humour that I’m enjoying and wasn’t expecting!
